STAGE 1: RESEARCH

The very first and basic thing for me to understand was ‘what is Convocation.’ And how different is NID’s convocation compared to other institutes?

About Convocation as ceremony
Rite of pessage...Convocation is the day of receiving or conferring of an academic degree or diploma. It’s the most important day in the life of every student. It is a day of big achievement and a day to feel proud about. It is a ceremony that marks one stage of a person’s life to another, ready and set to face new responsibilities and opportunities and to return to the society in a new status.

Convocation at NID

Acclaimed internationally as one of the foremost multidisciplinary institutions in the field of design education, applied research, training, design consultancy services and outreach
programmes NID (The National Institute of Design), has its convocation ceremony at the end of every year, and when an institute like NID has its convocation ceremony, the occasion is nothing short of a big event. Well, at NID, convocation is not just a ceremony where the Diplomas are handed over to the students, but it’s a celebration. It’s a complete refresh time for the community. The time when the students of all disciplines, convocating as well as the present, showcase their work. Giving Students, Teachers, staff and parents, an excellent opportunity to interact with each other. It is a momentous day when the best of design students who have been honing their skills and exploring their creativity for years at the Mecca of design, finally graduate. Around 100 students from four different faculties of design (Industrial, Communication, Textile and Apparel Design and IT integrated design) graduate out of the institute every year. On this day, the Institute also felicitates the students and presents them trophies, those who have made NID proud by winning prizes in various national and international design competitions. It definitely inspires many more to excel. Every year an eminent personality is invited to award the Diploma Certificate to the students, and to further encourage and inspire them.

The Graduate Show ‘Young Designers,’ a display of the design innovations by the graduatin
g students completed as part of their diploma project, is held every year. The design display is open to public for around three to four days. It is like a treat for design lovers and has strikingly innovative concepts and design themes on display.
The one day you look back to move forward.

BUDGET

There was no fixed budget as such for the communication materials for the convocation. The designer usually quotes the budget and NID approves it. Care had to be taken to see that there is minimum wastage.

As the number of invitation cards to be printed are less, giving us more opportunity to experiment.
